Biography

Dr. Ali studied Medicine at the University of Nottingham, during which time he also undertook an intercalated degree (BMedSci) in Neuroscience. Following completion of his General Medical training, he was awarded a British Heart Foundation research fellowship which was used to complete a PhD in vascular biology. His research explored the role of reactive oxygen species in the link between insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. He is currently a Specialist Registrar in Cardiology at Leeds General Infirmary, where he is training in Intervention.

Research Interest

His research interests include – coronary and structural intervention, percutaneous coronary intervention, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, ischaemic heart disease, acute coronary syndromes.

Career aspirations

I hope to qualify as a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in coronary and structural intervention. Following completion of my specialist training scheme in 2020, I intend toundertake an Interventional Cardiology fellowship at a high-volume international centre in order to gain further procedural experience, especially with regard to complex techniques. As a consultant, I aspire to work in a teaching hospital where I can combine my clinical practice with ongoing involvement in research and education.

Research Experience

I undertook a six-month period of laboratory-based research on nociceptive processing in dorsal root ganglion neurones. The results from this project were published in the European Journal of Neuroscience and contributed to the award of a First-Class Honours in my BMedSci degree.
Having maintained an interest in research throughout my post graduate career I was subsequently awarded a British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship that enabled me to complete a PhD in Vascular Biology at the University of Leeds. I investigated the effect of oxidative stress on vascular repair and angiogenesis in the context of insulin resistance, and work from this research has been presented at the AHA and ESC.
