Harold Andrew Sloas III, DO, RDMS, FACEP, FAAEM

Assistant Professor
Department of Emergency Medicine
University Of Kentucky
800 Rose Street, Room M-53
Lexington KY 40536-0298, USA

Dr. Sloas is best known as the voice of the PEM ED Podcast (www.pemed.org). He is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. He originally trained in adult emergency medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston before going on to complete a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine ~ Texas Children’s Hospital.
He graduated medical school in 2001 and completed an orthopaedic rotating surgical internship at the National Naval Medical Center San Diego before attending Naval Flight Surgery School in 2002. He was then stationed at Camp Pendleton California for the remainder of his tour of duty, which took him to Kuwait and Iraq with a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron in 2003 for Operation Desert Storm. After returning from the war, he continued work as a Naval Flight Surgeon until the time of his discharge as a Lieutenant Commander in 2006.
After he completed his military service, he finished a residency in emergency medicine and then briefly departed academics for community emergency medicine. While in private practice he quickly had the epiphany that his interests were in difficult airway, education, critical care, ultrasound and pediatric emergency medicine. With that realization, he returned to academics and completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine.
During the course of his medical training he has completed nearly two years of critical care subspecialty training. He also served as one of the emergency medicine critical care attendings and lecturers during his tenure as faculty at the University of Texas. He has a voracious interest in ultrasound and holds a degree as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). Andrew thoroughly believes that ultrasound will cure the world; or at the least, it will be responsible for the diagnoses that will lead to those cures.
